Non suicidal self injury (NSSI), defined as the deliberate destruction of body tissue that is not culturally sanctioned, in youth most commonly includes self cutting or scratching, self hitting, and self burning where the intent is not take one’s life. Recent studies indicate prevalence rates of NSSI in youth of 14 to 15 %. Onset of NSSI is typically during the adolescent period. The objective of this Clinical Case Conference is to inform participants about emerging assessment tools and treatments used for NSSI in youth. The program includes the presentation of five clinical cases demonstrating a variety of challenges related to assessment and approaches/choices to treatment in youth with self injury from the biopsychosocial perspective.
