The assessment of adolescents presenting with suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) forms a significant component of the work of many child and adolescent psychiatrists, as well as trainees. This Workshop reviews the latest understanding and evidence around the etiology and epidemiology of teen suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI); considers the issue of engaging teens in treatment; teaches the concepts of Therapeutic Assessment (TA) for teens presenting with suicide attempts or NSSI; teaches participants how to construct a TA diagram; and discusses how “exits” are created together with the adolescent. Participants view films of TA in practice, use sample scenarios to develop and practice skills, and work in small groups to focus on specific “exit” strategies.
