Everyday the clinical work of child and adolescent psychiatrists involves working with parents who often feel overwhelmed in attempting to elicit their child’s compliance. This Workshop addresses three main areas: identifying the common causes of ineffective limit setting by parents; a brief review of the effective utilization of behavioral techniques, such as natural/logical consequences as a component of limit setting; and identifying factors internal to parents (psychological functioning) and factors external to parents (marital/relationship functioning), which may complicate effective limit setting. Didactic presentation, video case presentation, case illustrations from presenters, and facilitation of case presentation by audience members are utilized to help clinicians understand the root causes of failure to set limits in order to create effective intervention strategies.
