Therapeutic Assessment is a new evidence-based approach to the assessment of teens presenting with suicide attempts or non-suicidal self-injury. It was developed in order to include a therapeutic component in the assessment process, with a view to improving compliance with follow-up treatment. Participants receive the most up-to-date information about suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury, factors that influence subsequent engagement with treatment, and effective treatment options. The rationale behind the development of a new assessment approach is outlined and the Therapeutic Assessment model is discussed. Participants learn competency in constructing Therapeutic Assessment diagrams and how to derive “exits” from the diagrammatic cycle of maladaptive behaviors using a range of evidence-based interventions.
