This Workshop provides information on the presentation and clinical features of depression in children and young people, and how depression is assessed in this population. Through video vignettes, role-playing, and experiential exercises, participants learn about current evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents within the context of practice guidelines, with a focus on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT); specifically the CBT offered at the Mood Disorder Clinic for Children and Young People. The three main areas covered are: 1) formulation and the role of maintaining factors, including rumination in the CBT model of depression; 2) the impact of hopelessness and low motivation and how to overcome the obstacles they present; and 3) incorporation of developmentally-adapted techniques used in CBT for depression among adults into work with children and young people.
