Kites and Monsters is a 25-minute ethnographic film that is part of the “Afflictions: Culture and Mental Illness in Indonesia” film series.
Kites and Monsters was filmed over the course of 13 years. It follows the development and cultural setting of a boy with Tourette’s disorder in a small village in Indonesia, and demonstrates how cultural practices support a positive psychosocial outcome and recovery for the child. Discussion focuses on culturally specific beliefs that support mental health recoveries and how cultural practices affect outcomes in neuropsychiatric disorders.
