This Workshop provides updated information on the differential diagnosis of somatoform disorders, factitious disorders, and malingering. These disorders present frequent challenges to child and adolescent psychiatrists regarding differential diagnosis and treatment. Better understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders and the available evidence-based treatments for their management can potentially improve clinician efficacy. Relevant
DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for each are reviewed and available treatments applicable for each are outlined. Recent fMRI studies pointing to the relevance of unconsciously based mechanisms associated with somatoform disorders are presented. Treatment strategies reviewed include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, hypnosis, pharmacotherapy, and adjunctive use of physical therapy.
