Youth spend a considerable amount of time listening to music, and it plays an important role in their identity development, e.g., establishing autonomy, forming peer relationships, and finding new role models. Whether the effects are negative or positive, the importance of music cannot be ignored in the understanding and treatment of children and adolescents. However, psychiatric training often misses exposure to this valuable tool, a fact that can negatively impact the practitioner’s clinical practice. Participants become familiar with the current trends and trendsetters in popular music; view different examples of music questionnaires; develop their own music questionnaire and learn how to use the questionnaire in their practice to facilitate assessment and build rapport; and gather resources that help them stay up-to-date on changing trends.
