Dr. Riggs is currently professor of Psychiatry in the Division of Substance Dependence at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Riggs is also the executive director of
Encompass: Integrated Treatment for Adolescents and Young Adults: an evidence-based treatment for young people with co-occurring disorders, developed by her research team at the University of Colorado. She is nationally known for her innovative pharmacotherapy and behavioral treatment research in adolescents with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders (SUD) and has published numerous empirical studies and monographs on this topic. Previous National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded studies include a controlled trial of fluoxetine plus cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in depressed adolescent SUD; and a multi-site trial of psychostimulant medication plus CBT in adolescents with ADHD and SUD. She is currently conducting an NIDA-funded, controlled trial of bupropion plus CBT in adolescents with ADHD who have co-occurring cannabis and nicotine dependence. Dr. Riggs discusses her research and the importance of CBT in treatment, and highlights areas that need future research.
