New practitioners can learn much from those who have accumulated years of experience in outpatient care. This Workshop features tips from four senior practitioners. Each shares a specific aspect of their approach to practice, including effective techniques for gathering information before the first meeting and forms to facilitate gathering this information; what informed consent requires and how to help parents and patients understand risks and benefits of each treatment choice; the importance of knowing what is happening in each sector of the patient’s life, including family, school, medical problems, medication compliance, medication side effects, and medication effectiveness; and ways to approach pre-appointment planning by defining the goals for the next session and the information needed to accomplish those goals. Attendees leave the Workshop with forms they can use or modify for use in their own practice.
