This Workshop focuses on navigating the special education system and addresses the variances in implementation by local schools. Participants gain knowledge of federal guidelines, as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and develop expertise in advocating within the special education system. The components of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) evaluation, coding, and placement processes are covered. Underlying political, social, and economic consideration that drive services within a school district are explored. The Workshop emphasizes the skills needed to attain optimal clinical outcomes through a collaborative effort between mental health and educational systems. Material on what a thorough psychological and cognitive assessment consists of and how to assist parents with knowledge of their due process rights are covered; as well as a discussion of Section 504, alternative schools, suspension, expulsion, extended school year, and how to guide parents with special needs children.
