This Special Interest Study Group presents core elements involved in creating a restraint prevention initiative and provides a forum to explore best practices in preventing the use of restraint and seclusion. Clinicians and administrators working in inpatient psychiatry units, residential facilities, detention centers, group homes, and therapeutic day schools all benefit from an increased awareness of changes in the philosophy behind and practice of restraint and have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues on common efforts to establish restraint prevention programs. Updates in the field are presented and obstacles to change discussed.
