Treating Deaf Youth with Multiple Handicaps

While deafness in U.S. children has decreased overall, cases involving children with deafness are becoming increasingly complex, with many of these children presenting with severe behavioral problems; and practitioners often have had little or no exposure to these children in their child and adolescent psychiatry training. Further compounding the problem is the diminishing resources available for the deaf population. This CCB discusses difficult cases of youth who are deaf and have concomitant disabilities. Attendees gain a mastery of the complex issues involved in evaluation of these youth; and acquire strategies for working with these patients and their families.
