Clinical Consultation Breakfast 8 (ticket)
Culturally Informed Child Psychiatric Practice
Child and adolescent psychiatrists in the United States are treating an increasing number of non-European, ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse children and youth. There are numerous cultural considerations around effective diagnosis, formulation, treatment selection, and adherence that need to be addressed in order to prevent cultural, racial, and ethnic disparities in child mental health services. Within an atmosphere that fosters open exchange of information, possible areas of needed knowledge and skills are discussed. Participants learn to identify cultural factors that influence treatment decisions, are exposed to the application of DSM-5’s Cultural Formulation, and develop greater comfort and proficiency in threating culturally diverse children and youth using both culturally informed and evidence-based approaches.
