Lessons Learned from Sandy Hook: The Psychiatrist's Role in Responding to School Shootings and Other Crises
In the aftermath of high profile shootings in schools, it becomes even more important for child and adolescent psychiatrists to understand and apply the best practices for engaging students, staff, and the community. This Forum reviews important ways in which mental health professionals can consult to schools following a crisis. In addition, strategies to effectively engage school administrators in order to prepare for tragedies, and strategies to employ to facilitate the healing process, are discussed. Clinicians with extensive experience in engaging schools, the community, and the media following such tragedies share their experiences and the underlying education principals they utilize.
