Clinical Case Conference 10 (open)
Contributions From Child Psychoanalysis: Medication Management With Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Explore psychodynamic issues that may be activated in both patient and therapist, as well as derivative unconscious factors that may arise with the introduction of medication during psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. Four discussants, experts in the fields of adolescent development, psychopathology, pharmacology, and family and psychoanalytic therapeutic work, guide you through two clinical cases. They provide clinical evidence for the necessity to continue a dynamic orientation during the use of medication, comment about aspects of treatment resistance, elaborate principles contributing to the integration of dynamic techniques and insights, consider the use of negative transference, and explore countertransference factors. They also address psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapists’ resistance to adding medication to therapy; e.g., being asked to do something they feel less confident in doing or were not trained to do, or experiencing feelings of failed therapy.
