Neurodevelopmental Disorder Associated With Prenatal Alcohol Exposure: Etiology, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention in an Era of DSM-5

Neurodevelopmental Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE) describes the wide range of neurocognitive, neurodevelopmental, and neurobehavioral problems associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. These lifelong effects can occur as early as the first few weeks post conception – before most women know they are pregnant – making education a significant part of prevention. This Institute presents information on alcohol teratology and the importance of vulnerability prior to pregnancy recognition, explains how to diagnose ND-PAE, provides U.S. and worldwide epidemiologic surveillance data, discusses multidisciplinary treatment in collaboration with medical and allied health professionals, shares clinical insights on psychopharmacologic management, provides insights into secondary disabilities and complex neurodevelopmental formulations, and underscores the important role that knowledgeable child and adolescent psychiatrists can play in early childhood intervention and primary prevention.  Increased understanding, improved coordination of care, and psychopharmacologic treatments can improve clinical outcomes for these individuals.
