Teaching Ethics: Approaches for Everyone

Providing educational experiences that promote an understanding of ethical and professional standards, and produce behavior consistent with these values, remains a challenge to child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP), during and beyond training. Using clinical examples from various areas of practice, this presentation demonstrates strategies for identifying, analyzing, and managing ethical dilemmas arising in CAP practice, dilemmas that often cannot be meaningfully separated from the practice context nor the cultural, societal, and personal factors of the individuals involved. Being an ethical child and adolescent psychiatrist requires not only the knowledge of certain ethical principles, but the skills to use them to analyze a situation and an attitude that ongoing ethical behavior is important. Attendees gain insight into their ethical behavior; and learn teaching approaches and acquire resources to use in teaching ethical principles.
