Motivational Interviewing: Preparing Youth for Change
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, collaborative, and directive treatment approach with a proven track record of enhancing a patient’s motivation to change. Developed and tested over the past 30 years, MI has been found effective when dealing with adolescent addiction, medical compliance, or public health practices. Participants receive MI training through a combination of didactic presentations, video examples, and exercises, and practice the use of basic MI techniques. Topics presented are the spirit of MI – collaboration, self motivation, and autonomy; OARS – open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summaries; Rolling with Resistance; research; Change Talk; developing a change plan; consolidating client commitment; and integrating MI with other interventions. Participants will leave able to effectively use MI techniques and develop a change plan for their patients.
