Organizing With Youth for Change: Challenges and Rewards
Youth organizations such as YouthMove, Let’s Erase the Stigma, Minding your Mind, Active Minds, and others strive to reduce stigma and educate youth about behavioral health. Activities of these groups have been instrumental in raising awareness about behavioral health among youth and young adults. Child and adolescent psychiatrists can benefit from joining and collaborating with youth and young adults for a variety of reasons. Potential benefits include becoming more effective clinical providers, improving policies and organizational structures so that they are more inclusive of youth voice, increasing the effectiveness of advocacy activities, better engaging youth and young adults in programs, and making educational materials more resonant for other youth. This CCB discusses the challenges and rewards of working with youth to make organizational change, develop programs, or develop educational materials.
