Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another: A Personal Story of the Triumph of Resilience Over Adversity
Factitious Disorder by Proxy, or Munchausen by Proxy (MBPS), is a serious, though uncommon, form of child maltreatment that puts the child at risk for unnecessary medical and psychiatric care. Recognizing MBPS can help mitigate adverse outcomes for the child. In this CCC, participants gain first hand knowledge from a survivor who recovered from this adversity. Kevin Lydon, PhD, speaks poignantly about his life as a child victim, sharing information regarding experience, identification, management, and recovery from this form of maltreatment. In addition, participants gain knowledge of how MBPS may present with psychiatric symptoms; attain skills that can assist in managing this disorder; review other forms of physical or emotional child maltreatment that may accompany MBPS; and learn about protective factors that support and promote resilience. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to ask questions and share your experiences treating this disorder. Information about survivor outcomes, response of perpetrators to treatment, and relationship of Factitious Disorder by Proxy to Parent Perception of Child Vulnerability will also be presented.
