Fundamentals of Practical Pediatric Psychopharmacology for the Primary Care Clinician
Many pediatricians and primary care physicians have a knowledge gap in training and little experience on the use of psychotropics in children and adolescents. With the prevalence of mental disorders in the pediatric population, this lack of knowledge and training makes pediatricians and primary care physicians ill-prepared to recognize and treat common childhood psychiatric disorders. This Institute provides practical information to these clinicians on the use of psychotropic medications in their practices. Presentations include discussions of clinically relevant aspects of pediatric psychopharmacology for the treatment of ADHD, depression, and anxiety disorders. Discussions focus on the “basics” of assessment, medication selection, initiation, titration, and management. Additionally, management of medications used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, pervasive developmental disorders, and aggression are addressed. Participants gain knowledge in the application of practical clinical information pertaining to pediatric psychopharmacology and how to responsibly use psychotropics for common pediatric mental health disorders.
