Clinical Case Conference 7 (open)
Anxiety in Autism
There is increased recognition that children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may also have an anxiety disorder, and conversely that some persons with anxiety show symptoms of ASD. This CCC examines the genetic, neurophysiological, and diagnostic relationship of ASD to anxiety disorder; and discusses why it is difficult to diagnose anxiety disorder in this population. Participants increase their ability to detect the symptoms of anxiety in ASD and understand how those symptoms relate to the core symptoms of autism; gain knowledge of how anxiety disorders and ASDs are interrelated; and become aware of recent reports of treatments designed to reduce the impact of anxiety in individuals with ASD.
