Ben X: A Cinematic Presentation of Bullying and Autism

Ben, a teenager diagnoses with Asperger syndrome is frequently bullied at school. As an alternative to getting bullied, Ben retreats into the world of role-playing games. After an especially brutal incident at school, Ben contemplates suicide. This 2007 movie serves as a catalyst to discuss the impact having a child with autism has on parents, and the potential parental or educational interventions to improve adaption and pro-social behaviors. Bullying in various social settings and the consequences on self-esteem and self-image are considered. Collaboration is fostered among experts in autism and cultural psychiatry to address suicide in autistic children and to develop a strategy to identify and intervene in the bullying of autistic children that can be applied to schools and communities across the country.
