Presidential Interview: Maryland Pao, MD
Maryland Pao, MD, is the Clinical Director and Deputy Scientific Director of the National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health. She serves as Chief of the Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service in the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center. A native of Bethesda, MD, she attended Wellesley College before completing a BA/MD program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed pediatric and psychiatric residency training as well as a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is board certified in pediatrics, general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and psychosomatic medicine. Dr. Pao’s research has encompassed psychopharmacologic and psychosocial studies of cancer, human immunodeficiency virus, as well as pain management and risk of suicide in medically ill children. She has published more than 70 research articles and chapters, and co-edited the Quick Reference for Pediatric Oncology Clinicians: The Psychiatric and Psychological Dimensions of Pediatric Cancer Symptom Management (2009) and Voicing My Choices™ (2012), an advance care planning guide for adolescents and young adults. She is on the Clinical Faculty at Georgetown University, George Washington University, and at Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine. She has been a member for AACAP since 1990 and a Fellow since 2008. She has served on the HIV Issues Committee as well as the Physically Ill Child Committee which she has co-chaired since 2006. She is the 2012 recipient of the AACAP Simon Wile Leadership in Consultation Award.
