Master Clinician: Alice R. Mao, MD: Autism
Alice R. Mao, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. This Clinical Consultation Breakfast focuses on helping clinicians and family members provide comprehensive treatment for children and adolescents with autism. Dr. Mao has focused her educational interests on the integration of psychopharmacology and educational and social interventions for children with autism. In addition, she has participated in clinical trial research on psychopharmacology interventions for children with autism and children with ADHD. Her courses on the ABC's of ABA (applied behavioral analysis) have been sought after for helping clinicians to understand the importance of providing intense early educational programs for children with autism. Dr. Mao has received many awards for her teaching including the Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award for enduring educational materials and teaching. In addition, she has been active in raising awareness of the importance of intervention for parents who are coping with a life-changing stress of raising a child with autism and possible intellectual disability. Her publications have focused on intervention for parents of children with autism including a chapter in the Kaplan and Sadock textbook on helping parents raising children with psychiatric disorders.
