Sports Psychiatry and Sports-Related Concussion
Following a traumatic brain injury, over 20 percent of individuals incur a newly developed psychiatric disorder. There is a lack of information on the mental health of child and adolescent athletes, and even less on athletes following a concussion. In this SIG, sports psychiatrists lead discussions on sports related concussions, the diagnosis and clinical management of the post concussive athlete with pre-existing risk factors for developing or exacerbating a psychiatric disorder, and the emerging and future research on this topic. Attendees share experiences from clinical practice regarding the complex management of athletes with post concussive syndrome and mild neurocognitive disorder.
