Family Interventions for Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists
Child and adolescent psychiatrists are constantly interacting with families, but promoting healthy interactions within the family, with the child, and among family members can prove challenging. This SIG reviews family interventions and family therapy in a manner that enhances child and adolescent psychiatrists’ clinical skills, enriching their practice and adding to their therapeutic effectiveness in working with children and their families. Participants discuss their concerns and problems working with families and share common difficult family scenarios. Challenges, such as high conflict divorce, parents with mental illness and/or substance abuse, cultural differences within families and/or between families and clinicians, and significant parent-child conflict are discussed.
