Gender Identity: Issues for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
Clinicians are more likely now to encounter patients with gender-related issues then in the past. This CCB provides a forum for clinicians to bring their questions about gender related issues to an open dialogue. Strategies in the area of assessment of gender nonconforming and/or dysphoric youth are discussed, including: leaving assumptions behind, building alliances with children and families to foster trust, recognizing cultural and ethnic diversity, bringing an appreciation of the developmental context into assessment and treatment, understanding nuances of language use, and accessing community support. In addition, clinicians learn about risk factors that affect outcomes and how to connect with members who have more experienced in this area when guidance and help are needed.
