Master Clinician: James J. Hudziak, MD: The Vermont Family-Based Approach: Child Psychiatry Using an Evidenced-Based Health Promotion, Illness Prevention, Family-Based Intervention Approach
James J. Hudziak, MD is a Professor of Child Psychiatry, Medicine, and Pediatrics at the University of Vermont. Dr. Hudziak is also the Thomas M. Achenbach Endowed Chair of Developmental Psychopathology and Director of both the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Vermont Center for Children, Youth, and Families (VCCYF) at the UVM Medical Center. Dr. Hudziak also holds a Special Professorship at ErasmusMC in Rotterdam and adjunct Professorships in Child Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis and The Giesel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He holds numerous grants in the US and abroad and has authored over 150 peer reviewed papers in the areas of child development, genetics, and neuroimaging. Dr. Hudziak started the VCCYF in 2007 and has remained a busy clinician in addition to his duties as a research scientist. He developed a novel clinical approach, the Vermont Family-Based Approach (VFBA), in which all members of the family are assessed for emotional-behavioral strengths and vulnerabilities. In the practice of the VFBA, once careful assessment has been completed all families receive "Family Wellness Coaching" in which the health and wellness of all family members is incentivized. For parents and children who struggle with emotional behavioral symptoms, evidenced-based psychotherapies are delivered from a family based perspective. Intervention with medication includes addressing parental vulnerabilities first, followed by parent training, followed by, if needed, medication for the child. Dr. Hudziak will share vignette’s about the use of the VFBA in Child Psychiatry settings, primary care settings, schools and internationally.
