Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Disorder and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated With Streptococcal Infections: Identification and Intervention in Clinical Practice

Children with Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Disorders (PANS and PANDAS) often present with acute and severe onset obsessive-compulsive disorder accompanied by separation anxiety, urinary urgency, hyperactivity, impulsivity, deterioration in handwriting, and decline in school performance. Understanding the epidemiology, symptomatology, overlapping differential diagnoses, and diagnostic criteria is important for early intervention. Interactive techniques are used to illustrate clinical presentations and discuss implementation of and referral to effective interventions. Available resources for patients, families, and systems that work with children are provided.
