Understanding Video Games: A Child Psychiatrist's Call of Duty
Video games are increasingly the pastime of choice for American youth. Child and adolescent psychiatrists need to stay abreast of the latest trends in video game culture and understand video game genres to increase rapport with children and adolescents during assessment and treatment. Participants gain insight into the role that video games play in children’s lives, as well as how game choices may impact mental health and functioning. Discussion includes the clinical effects of video game habits on psychological well being; how video game play can be appropriately assessed in clinical settings; and how parents and caregivers can guide their children to avoid unhealthy video game habits and exposure.
