Sexual Orientation: Clinical Strategies for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
Child and adolescent psychiatrists with expertise in the area of adolescent sexuality, particularly with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity issues, share their knowledge and experience of treating gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning (GLBQ) youth. Participants learn about the importance of discussing sexual orientation with youth and how to do so in a supportive and confidential way; strategies in assessment, including the importance of taking a sexual history from all adolescents, the need to discuss safe-sex practices, and relationship formation; normative sexual orientation development in GLBQs; stressors and vulnerabilities of GLBQ youth; concerns that arise in treatment including risk behaviors; assessment and treatment plans; and resources for the treating psychiatrist as well as for GLBQ youth and their families.
