Preparing Child Psychiatry Fellows for Consultation and Collaboration With Primary Care
Child psychiatry access programs are being created to increase the capacity of primary care providers to deliver appropriate mental health care for their pediatric patients. This leads to the need to educate and train child and adolescent psychiatry fellows in the science and art of collaboration and consultation to pediatric primary care providers. The perspectives of several university faculty who have developed models for such training describe and discuss the model used in their training program. This provides the basis for the exchange of ideas and strategies that can serve as the foundation for development and standardization across training programs. Those training fellows and those with a child psychiatry “access” program benefit from this exchange of ideas and challenges.
