Pediatric Bipolar Disorder: From Genes and Brains to Diagnosis and Treatment

There has been great public and academic interest in the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents over the past decade, originally in the U.S. but now extending internationally. Thus, in the U.S. in the past decade, diagnoses of bipolar disorder in children under 18 years old has risen 4000%. Whether this increase is due to increased recognition, increased incidence, or overdiagnosis is not clear. However, it is becoming clear that bipolar disorder begins in childhood 50–66% of the time. Therefore, if the incidence of bipolar disorder (I or II) in adults is 4 %, then there are at least 1 – 2 million children in the U.S. alone with bipolar disorder or the beginning manifestations of the disorder. The high incidence and morbidity of this disorder has led to much needed research concerning the diagnosis, phenomenology, biology, and treatment of bipolar disorder in youth. This Institute gathers speakers from various institutions, who are all experienced in their field, with distinct yet complementary approaches to treating bipolar disorder. All speakers present reviews of their topics, based on empirical evidence in the literature. Furthermore, each speaker also provides clinical “pearls” as a synthesis of their presentation to ensure that the latest research also has a clinical message.
