College Student Mental Health
The problems faced by college students have increased complexity and severity, placing a greater demand of time and expertise on treating psychiatrists and college counseling centers. Child and adolescent psychiatrists, given their specialized knowledge, are well positioned to provide both direct care to transitioning patients and their families and to provide psychiatric consultation to college mental health settings. This SIG explores approaches child and adolescent psychiatrists may take to prevent or reduce the stress of the college experience, e.g., focusing on the transition to college, campus-wide mental health workshops for students and faculty; and support teams of professionals to interface with students and advisors. In addition, legal considerations pertinent to the care of the young adult population are explored.
