Adolescent Substance Use and Psychiatric Comorbidity: Real-World Clinical Practice Essentials
This Institute educates child and adolescent psychiatrists about the importance of early identification, and simple and effective interventions for adolescents with comorbid substance use disorders (SUD). These conditions frequently co-occur with mood, anxiety, psychotic, and disruptive behavior disorders. Left untreated, SUD rarely resolve spontaneously, and frequently adversely impact the course of co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Recent advances have helped to better understand the biological underpinnings of SUD and in the development of effective biological and behavioral treatments. Presenters review the relationships between SUD and other adolescent psychiatric conditions; discuss how clinical symptoms of SUD may present in youth diagnosed and receiving treatment for other psychiatric disorders; and provide guidance to clinicians about screening and treatment interventions. With information gained from this Institute, attendees are able to implement practical evidence-based strategies to confidently identify and manage SUD and psychiatric comorbidity in clinical practice.
