Ethics and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training: The "Hidden" Curriculum
Child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) residents often think twice before registering dissatisfaction concerning individual faculty, supervisors, and/or institutional policies, and may subsequently swallow their concerns. Similarly, faculty will notice counterproductive attitudes and behaviors among CAP residents, reacting to such behaviors with anger or withholding comment for fear of upsetting residents or established, but unwritten administrative, "quid pro quo" protocols. This CCC brings the “hidden” ethics curriculum to the forefront and openly discusses a variety of ethical considerations that underlie desirable resident and faculty conduct and their application during the course of training. Participants become aware of factors that contribute to an atmosphere that promotes collegiality; and learn about ethics and educational resources that endorse and encourage the creation of openness between CAP faculty and residents. Discussion provides an opportunity for CAP residents and faculty to openly interact.
