Workshop 13 (ticket)
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the School System: Understanding Public School Law

Public school law guides access to appropriate services in the school setting for children and adolescents with mental health needs. A working understanding of the legal framework and related challenges faced by parents, teachers, and school administrators enhances the child and adolescent psychiatrist’s ability to constructively collaborate with the school to effectively advocate for the needs of their patients. This Workshop provides a comparison of regular education law, special education law, civil rights law, and disability law. Attendees gain knowledge that enables them to make distinctions between the legal eligibility for special education services and the clinical and educational needs of their patients.
