Robert Coles, An Extraordinary Man: A Continuing Media Discussion
Robert Coles, MD, James Agee Professor of Social Ethics at Harvard University, now retired, spent much of his professional life interviewing children, adolescents, and adults about major concerns of his era; resulting in a six-volume collection, Children of Crisis, that earned him the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-fiction. Dr. Coles devoted much of his career educating students and professionals about the worlds of ethics and moral values as experienced in a variety of social and community settings. Excerpts from a third videotaped interview with Dr. Coles are presented where he describes aspects of his professional career and emphasizes the potential child and adolescent psychiatrists have to make positive impacts on society. Dr. Coles can serve as a potential role model for child and adolescent psychiatrists of all ages who desire to do more with their choice of specialty than limit themselves to a proverbial "9 to 5" job.
