Language Development and Disorders in Bilingual (Dual Language) Children
Child and adolescent psychiatrists often have limited training in language development and language disorders. After a brief overview of the clinical, demographic, and developmental significance of dual language acquisition, this SIG reviews language development research and presents definitions of first language and second language, dual language children versus bilingual children, second language learners versus native bilinguals, sequential versus simultaneous bilingualism, and proficient versus emergent language development. Language delays and disorders in dual language children; and related clinical, developmental, and scientific implications are discussed. Participants are encouraged to present their clinical and developmental questions, ideas, and ongoing research related to the topic.
