Understanding Video Games: A Child Psychiatrist's Call of Duty
Recent surveys indicate that up to 99% of adolescents play video games regularly. Child and adolescent psychiatrists must be able to evaluate the video game play habits of their patients to advise them on the risks and benefits associated with game play. Attendees become familiar with current trends in video game play including language, genres, and popular titles; learn the clinical effects of video games on psychological well being, aggressive behavior, attention/cognitive difficulties, academic performance, and sleep habits/disorders; and learn psychiatric factors associated with problematic or pathological video game play. Together attendees develop a video game questionnaire for use in clinic practice at the time of assessment.
