Clinical Case Conference 13 (open)
Grandparents and the Mental Health of Children
A significant numbers of children living in the United States are living in homes where a grandparent is head of the household and where neither parent is present. To better treat children in the care of their grandparents, the child and adolescent psychiatrist must understand the various relationships that may exist between grandparents and their children and grandchildren. This CCC provides a discussion of the specific issues and challenges faced by grandparents and their grandchildren as they relate to the treatment of these children in clinical settings. Attendees are better able to understand how particular behaviors on the part of grandparents can influence, positively or negatively, the well being of grandchildren; learn to identify important considerations and useful approaches to grandparents raising grandchildren when they present in clinical practice; and become aware of community resources available to assist grandparents raising grandchildren.
