Effective State-Level Mental Health Advocacy and Coalition Building for ROCAPs: The CAL-ACAP Experience
The need for child and adolescent psychiatrists to have a voice in the shaping of public policy is abundantly clear. Organized advocacy efforts can have a great impact on shaping policy and succeed in building a more collaborative mental health system. Utilizing the elements described in this workshop, ROCAPs have the unique opportunity to mobilize their members for effective state-level advocacy. Techniques to educate and build relationships with legislators are explored, methods to engage members in the mental health advocacy activities are outlined, and the importance of involving mental health organizations in the effort are discussed.
