Neurodevelopmental Disorder Associated With Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE): Challenges and Importance of Diagnosis and Treatment Across the Life Span
This Special Interest Study Group exchanges information about the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on development over the lifespan and the use of the Neurodevelopmental Disorder associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE) criteria in clinical practice. Following a 2005 action paper unanimously approved by the American Psychiatric Association Assembly and presentations at AACAP in 2009 and 2011, DSM-5 introduced the diagnosis of “Other Specified Neurodevelopmental Disorder,” listing Neurodevelopmental Disorder associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure as the only example given for the diagnostic code 315.8. The Interagency Coordinating Committee on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (ICCFASD), in collaboration with the DSM-5 Substance Abuse Work Group, worked to establish criteria for Neurobehavioral Disorder associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, which is listed in the section on “Conditions for Further Study.” Child psychiatrists present their perspectives and are available for an informal question/answer discussion along with members of the DSM-5 Subcommittee of the ICCFASD Diagnostic Issues Work Group and seasoned clinicians working with this vulnerable population.
