College Student Mental Health
Child and adolescent psychiatrists can prevent or reduce the stress for adolescents transitioning to college by providing direct care to transitioning patients and/or psychiatric consultation to college mental health settings. This SIG provides AACAP members an opportunity to talk about the nature and extent of their involvement in the treatment of youth transitioning to college; and to share their relevant questions, concerns, experiences, and ideas to better address treatment needs of this population. The current status of available mental health services for college students is reviewed, legal considerations pertinent to the care of this population are outlined, and ideas to improve access to and utilization of available services are explored.
