Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Identification and Intervention in Clinical Practice
Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are a highly unrecognized proportion of patients presenting to child and adolescent psychiatry practices with behavior and learning problems, and/or emotional and social difficulties. Outcomes for this group of children can improve by increasing the knowledge and skill of child and adolescent psychiatrists to identify children with FASD, providing needed psychoeducation to the patient's family and systems, and implementing effective interventions. Attendees gain increased facility in diagnosing FASD and increased competence in offering evidence-based management strategies. The effects of in utero alcohol exposure and the important role of primary prevention are discussed.
